Orange Theory Fitness is my pick for the Best Busy Mom Workout. This is a boutique style gym that focuses on strength and cardiovascular training through group classes. Best of all, it is like having your own personal trainer for one hour.
The Orange Theory
Each workout is backed by the science of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). By wearing a heart rate monitor either on your chest or your wrist, you are able to monitor it to reach goals. Screens are displayed in the gym and heart rate levels are matched with colors. The goal is to get 12-24 minutes in the “orange.” When this happens, the “orange theory” is that you continue to burn calories because of a revved up metabolism for up to 36 hours.
The gym is set up with three different stations: treadmills, rowers, and weights. Within the hour, you rotate among this equipment to get a full body workout. Each day has a different focus that consists of either: Endurance, Strength, Power or ESP (a mix of endurance, strength, and power). While these types of workouts rotate throughout a week, the workouts are never the same.
Each class is like a party with orange lights glowing and great workout music. Every trainer is incredible in their motivation and knowledge of various options to personalize your workout. The class starts with a three minute warm-up no matter what station you begin in. Following the warm-up, the trainer than begins to explain the cardio intervals for those on the treadmills as well as demonstrating each exercise for those in the weight room.
The pace is extremely fast so you have to be ready to move. The good news is that even though things go fast, trainers do a great job of reminding you to listen to your body and hydrate.
OTF provides several membership options to fit a budget. However, it is more expensive than most monthly gym payments. Three different membership options exist that give you either 4, 8 or unlimited classes per month. Some members choose the 4 or 8 options because they use the classes as a supplement to their regular training.
For me and my busy life, I need a “one and done” workout and this is exactly that. My membership is the unlimited plan and that allows me to go whenever it works for my schedule. Memberships can also be used at any location so no matter where I am when I travel, if I can find a gym, I can get in a workout.
While results differ for every person, OTF recommends 3-4 classes a week in order to see quick results. However, the key is definitely eating well in order to see the real results. The gym will often do promotions that include meeting with nutritionists or getting help with maintaining a healthy diet so that you are maximizing your workouts.
I joined OTF as soon as my OBGYN released me to exercise after the birth of my second daughter. Because I kept up with my workouts as much as I could during pregnancy, I was able to jump back in and somewhat maintain the pace of an OTF class. Since this has been almost a year ago, I have been able to see major results in my fitness stamina as well as my physique.
I am finally back down to pre-baby weight and have redefined my muscles that I completely lost while pregnant. Although I am still having to work on my abs (that’s a different post altogether), the impact of this type of exercise has made a huge difference on my energy levels and my overall feeling of confidence.
My vote is OTF as the best busy mom workout!
